ETOBICOKE, Ont -- On the strength of their best set thus far this season, the Humber Hawks men's volleyball team triumphed over the Cambrian Golden Shield, rocking their opponents in three straights sets (25-7, 25-17, 25-14) for their fifth consecutive victory.
The Hawks were in control of the game from the outset, taking the Golden Shield by storm, scoring nine straight points to jump out to a 12-2 lead. Another seven consecutive points would put the set far out of Cambrian's reach, with Humber taking it 25-7. Serving streaks from Dylan Devecseri and Kamyn Wilkins were the highlight of the Hawks' most dominant set of the season.
The second set would begin in a similar fashion to the first, with the Hawks jumping to an early lead. Leading 14-5 partway into the set, Humber's offence slowed, with the teams exchanging points and Cambrian gradually chipping away at their deficit. Though Cambrian attempted to capitalize on a late rally, the Hawks would pull through and claim the second set 25-17.
The Hawks' offensive power returned in full force to start the third set, quickly taking an 8-2 lead over Cambrian. Humber's lead would gradually, but steadily, grow throughout the remainder of the set, culminating in four straight points to finish off the set, and the game, with a 25-14 win.
David Fountain led the Hawks with nine points (seven kills, one serving ace, one block), while Alex Bowden scored eight (eight kills). Dylan Devecseri, the fuel behind the Hawks' first set dominance, finished with six points (one kill, five serving aces).
Jackson Brear, with five points (three kills, one serving ace, one block) was named the Hawks Nation Player of the Game.
The Hawks improve to a 6-2 record with their win tonight, while the Golden Shield's record drops to 1-8.
Humber's final opponent before the end of their first half play is the Boreal Vipers, playing at home on Sunday at approximately 3:00pm.
