BARRIE, ON: The Humber Hawks faced the number one team in the east division and the hosts the Georgian Grizzlies in the second semi-final of the 2018 OCAA Men’s Volleyball Championship on Friday night at the Georgian Athletic Centre. The Hawks fought through a very loud home team crowd to take the match in three very tight sets 3-0 by scores of 25-21, 25-22 and 25-22. Clayton Blanchette (St. Catharines) was named player of the game for the Hawks after posting a team-high three blocks along with five kills. “The boys came together, it was a group effort, I’ve never seen us play like that before,” said Blanchette post-game. “The crowd was hype and it was a great atmosphere, it was fun to play.” Humber Head Coach Wayne Wilkins was impressed with his team’s execution on the court. “Probably in my most recent years, one of the easiest matches on a coach,” said Wilkins. “These kids work so hard, I don’t ever have to question or worry, they did it themselves and earned it.” The Hawks will now move onto the gold medal match against the Fanshawe Falcons on Saturday afternoon at 5 p.m. “Our last match up was a barn burner,” added Wilkins. “We are tightly matched teams. If we work hard and don’t get any self-doubt, just stay confident, we will be fine.” The Grizzlies will now re-set focus in on earning their first OCAA medal in team history when they go for bronze on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. when they take on the Redeemer Royals.

BARRIE, ON: The Humber Hawks just completed their best season in the last few years, finishing the year with an OCAA silver medal around their neck. Although it was not the colour they wanted, leading into the gold medal game with the top-ranked and undefeated Fanshawe Falcons, give them full credit for a terrific season and an outstanding provincial tournament. Humber advanced to the gold medal game with a solid quarter-final win over the consolation champs from Conestoga, and then a sweep of the host and number one team from the East, in the Georgian Grizzlies. Fanshawe swept through the two first round in easy fashion, downing Fleming and Redeemer in straight sets. Fanshawe cruised to the OCAA provincial title over the Humber Hawks with a controlling 3-0 (25 -12,25-18,25-13) Give the Falcons full credit in the win, as they did not allow a very good Humber to play a part in the outcome. From set to set, it was Fanshawe that dictated the play, first by great defence and then by an all-inclusive offence that was directed by their setter. “Simply put, they were the better team tonight”, said Hawks head coach Wayne Wilkins. “I am so proud of my guys, and even though the silver may be hard to swallow now, they earned it and will be that even hungrier next year”. Dylan Devecseri was his Humber's Player of the Game after posting a team-high 10 kills. Two Hawks were recognized for their fine play when the championship all-stars were announced. Devecseri and Kamyn Wilkins were named to the championship all-star team.
