ETOBICOKE, Ont—The Humber Hawks men's volleyball team (9-6, 4th West) fell to the Redeemer Royals (10-5, 3rd West) in four sets (24-26, 22-25, 32-30, 23-25) Thursday evening at the Humber Athletic Centre.
Humber began the evening in a tie with Redeemer for third place in the west division but with the loss falls in to a tie now for fourth with Niagara with just three games remaining on the schedule. Each set was heavily contested in the match with neither team losing a set by more than three points. Humber battled back from a number of deficits in the match but ultimately the Royals proved too much for them on this night.
The Hawks top performers for the match were second-year players Clayton Blanchette, who finished with 33 points, including a career-high 30 kills, an ace, and two blocks, while Alex Gibbs added 25 points of his own with 24 kills, and a block.
In the opening set Humber would fall behind after leading early on and were down by six 15-21 but would rally back with a 9-2 run to take a 24-23 lead. Unfortunately the Hawks would fail to close out the frame and gave up the next three points to drop the first set.
The second set saw Humber fall behind early to the Royals before battling back to take their first lead of the set 15-14. The two teams went on to trade points for the remainder of the frame until Redeemer was able to put together a run late and take another tight set by just three points.
The third frame was the most closely contested of the match as neither team was able to build more than a four point lead throughout. The teams were tied at 15 part way through the set and went back and forth for the rest of the frame running the score all the way up to 30 a piece before the Hawks were able to put together two straight points and close out the third.
In the fourth set Humber would fall behind again being down by as much as nine at one point trailing 10-19. The Hawks would again show their character battling back until they trailed by only one point as the score was 23-24. Humber's late rally would come up short however, as Redeemer would go on to score the next point to win the set and the match 3-1.
The Hawks will take on the west division leading Fanshawe Falcons (13-1, 1st West) in their final home game of the season this Saturday, February 4. First serve will take place 30 minutes after the completion of the women's game scheduled for 1pm.
