HAWKS FALL TO No. 8 MOHAWK

By: E. Garro

ETOBICOKE, Ont -- The Humber Hawks (5-2, 3rd West) men's volleyball team kept all three sets close but in the end no. 8 Mohawk Mountaineers (7-1, 2nd West) were too much and handed Humber their second straight loss.

Over the last eight meetings Humber has a 4-4 record over the Mountaineers; however Mohawk has won the last four meetings.

The Mountaineers, who are the reigning OCAA silver medalists are ranked eighth in the country and came into this game on a one-game losing skid.

The three sets finished 25-21, 25-20, and 25-18 with all three sets being closer than the score line shows. Humber finished with a .229 hitting percentage and Mohawk finished with a .416 hitting percentage.

The Hawks were led by second-year outside hitter and OCAA leading scorer Clayton Blanchette (St. Catharines) who finished the night with 10 points (seven kills, one ace, two blocks) the lowest point total he's had all season.

On a high-note, Humber's second-year middle-blocker and multi-sport athlete Andrew Blakey (Collingwood) recorded his first points as a Hawk, finishing with five (three kills, two blocks). He is also a pitcher for the men's baseball team.

With the loss, Humber failed to capitalize on the opportunity to be tied for second place in the West division with Mohawk.

The Hawks will now turn their sights to this Sunday's match when they host the St. Clair Saints (3-4, 5th West). Match start is 3 pm.
