HAWKS MEN, NOW 3-0, CONTINUE STRONG OPENING TO SEASON

SUDBURY, ON: The Humber Hawks men's volleyball team improved their record to 3-0 on the season after wins over Cambrian and Boreal in Sudbury this weekend.

The Hawks defeated Cambrian 3-1, and then whitewashed Boreal 3-0.

Saturday 

The Humber men's volleyball team started off their Sudbury road trip with a 3-1 victory against Cambrian College. 

During the first set, the Hawks lead consistently throughout. Humber dictated pace the entire set. Both teams had a few serving errors, but Humber managed to stay ahead. 

The energy was great on Humber's side and continued to increase with every dig. 

Hawks took the first set, 25-16. 

First-year left side hitter, Nico Quiben lead the team in digs for the match. 

During the second set Humber continued the energy. The game was sound volleyball, as they executed the basics extremely well. Both teams were working hard and digging balls, but Humber was executing. Humber won set two, 25-17.

 

Clayton Blanchette lead the match in kills with a whopping 26. Behind him was Alex Gibbs at 15.

 

At the start of the third set, the momentum wasn't in Humber's favour as much as it had been in the previous two sets. Humber had the lead for the majority of the set, but around the 20 point mark, both teams were point for point. 

Humber had the match point advantage at 24-23, when an a reserve was called from the head official. Humber lost momentum, and called a time out, but Cambrian had a side-out play and took the third set 26-24

During the fourth set, Humber very quickly found their rhythm and dominated both on offense and defense. With a consistent level of play, Humber took back the fourth set for the match win 25-13. 

Sunday 

The Humber men's volleyball team added another win to their 2016-2017 season with a three set sweep against the Boreal Viperes. 

Humber took a few points to settle in, but after came full force at Boreal. Consistency with serving and defensive transitions created a gap for the Hawks. The Hawks passed a 2.4 in the first set which created lots of opportunities for their hitters. 

Right-side Alex Gibbs went on a long service run in the first set. He served a match-total of fourteen serves. 

Humber took the first set, 25-8

Although there weren't many balls coming back for the Hawks to transition, the men were making smart plays at the net. Left-side, Clayton Blanchette lead the match in kills with a total of 10. 

Humber's new recruits saw lots of court today and they gelled together to play very well. Serve receive was great in the match, which meant that the rookies also had lots of attempts at the net.  Second-year Codi Burton passed a 2.55 in today's game.

The second set finished with a score of 25-20 for the Hawks. 

Continuing with the momentum, Humber came out strong in the third set. Midway through, the score was closer than it had been in the previous two sets, but Humber was able to side out and keep control of the game. Hawks take set three, 25-18

Humber will play Sheridan on Thursday, November 17.
