HAWKS NEED FOUR SETS TO ELIMINATE THE BRUINS

February 24, 2017

HAMILTON, ON: The Humber Hawks, just off the heels of a tight championship quarter-final loss on Friday night to the Georgian Grizzlies, needed a fourth set to dismiss the pesky Sheridan Bruins. Humber won the match 3-1 (26-24, 25-19, 20-25, 25-11). The first set saw the Bruins run out to an early three point lead, but after the Hawks got even the set ping-ponged back and forth right to the 15 point mark. With veteran Michael Majcen at the service line, Humber went on a run, forcing Sheridan to call a timeout with Humber in the lead 19-5. With Humber on the brink of winning, Sheridan went on a run of their own, and forced a Hawk timeout. It took a controversial kill by Alex Gibbs, followed up by the set winner by Gibbs. Humber won the set 26-24. The second set started out much like the first, with the Bruins sprinting to an early lead before Humber brought it even. And, as with the first set, Humber went into a lead after the 15 point mark. With Sheridan coming back, a missed serve put the score at 22-19, Hawks. In the best rally of the game, the Hawks won the point to move the score to 24-19. A huge block on the next rally ended the set. Hawks win 25-19. The third set saw the Hawks lead at the 10 point mark, forcing the Bruins to have to come from behind if they wanted to extend the match. The Bruins turned the set around by going on the biggest run of the set, and led 15-12. Humber could not respond, and the Bruins put the set away, winning 25-20. The fourth and final set was all Humber. They led early and extended the lead until they had a 21-8 lead, on their way to a dominating 25-11 win. The game ended on a booming kill by the Hawks Adam Kinoshita. The Hawks Player of the Game was Clayton Blanchette. Individual stats to come. Humber will now advance to the consolation final on Saturday afternoon at 12 noon, vs Redeemer.
