Men's Soccer Earns Spot in OCAA Final With Win Over Seneca, 2-1

PETERBOROUGH – The Humber men's soccer team continued its impressive run of postseason soccer, defeating Seneca in the OCAA semifinal Friday afternoon, 2-1. Max Ferrari's highlight tally in the second half was the game-winner, with Humber moving on to its ninth provincial title in the last ten years.

No. 4 Seneca opened the game pressing, finding a scoring chance in the third minute. Chris Munoko was sprung alone inside the box, making a left-footed strike but keeper Nicholas Frenati cut down the angle, making a brilliant diving save to his left to keep Seneca off of the board.

The save by Frenati sparked Humber's offence, giving the Hawks three scoring opportunities over the next five minutes. Seneca keeper Anthony Gurrieri was up to the task, turning away each chance.

In the 18th minute, Seneca broke the draw despite limited opportunities. Streaking down the sideline, a pass was made to Cale Loughrey who was alone at the top of the box. Loughrey fired his shot to the bottom of the net, giving Seneca the lead, 1-0.

Humber's confidence never wavered, continuing to get good looks on net. Off of a free kick, Gurrieri made two brilliant saves, but Leaford Allen found the third rebound and made no mistake, scoring the equalizer in the 29th minute.

After the break, Andres Sanchez made a deep cross to find Allen for a deep volley, but his strike grazed the far crossbar and stayed out.

The Hawks were finally able to take the lead for good in the 58th minute when Julian DeSousa made a long cross to Max Ferrari. Ferrari cut back towards the middle of the pitch, striking a brilliant shot from the corner of the box to the far post for his first career postseason goal.

Less than four minutes later, Seneca had another scoring opportunity when Michael Washington got behind the defence and was alone in the box. Nicholas Frenati rushed out to cut of the angle, making another big save to keep Humber's lead in-tact.
