Green, Strong Defence Lift Men’s Soccer to OCAA Semifinal

PETERBOROUGH – A penalty kick in the 72nd minute by Cody Green was all that Humber needed to beat Algonquin Wednesday morning in the OCAA quarter-final.

On a windy morning at the Fleming Sports Complex, Algonquin found its best scoring chance early in the 13th minute, blasting a curling shot from the top of the box to the far post. Veteran keeper Nicholas Frenati was up to the task, diving to his left to make a crucial save.

Humber's best scoring opportunity came later in the half, when Cody Green made a brilliant cross into the box, finding the head of Federico Leal. Algonquin keeper Colin Gibson made an even better play, diving to his right to keep the game scoreless heading into the break.

In the 68th minute, Algonquin was called for a handball in the 18-yard box and Humber was awarded a penalty kick. Freshman standout Julian DeSousa made a great shot to the bottom right of the net, but once again Colin Gibson was up to the task, making another brilliant save to keep the game scoreless.

Elijah Larin was a late substitution for head coach Michael Aquino, and immediately made an impact on the pitch. In the 72nd minute, Leaford Allen made a great through pass to spring Larin on a breakaway, with only the keeper to beat. Larin chipped the ball past Gibson, but was taken down in the box and Humber was once again awarded a penalty kick. Senior Cody Green, playing through injury, stepped to the spot and converted his second penalty kick in two straight games, giving the Hawks the late lead.

Humber's defence was lockdown over the final 22 minutes of play, holding on to advance to the semifinal, 1-0.

• Keeper Nicholas Frenati made six saves to record his third career clean sheet – the fourth-most in program history.
• Humber improves to 24-3 all-time in the quarter-final round, and 6-11 against Algonquin in postseason play.
• Cody Green recorded his second career postseason tally.

Humber men's soccer will play the winner of the UTM/Seneca quarter-final on Oct. 25. Game time is set for noon.
