MEN'S SOCCER WIN ON PENALTY KICKS, ADVANCE TO CCAA SEMIFINAL

CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI – Humber men's soccer maintained its championship aspirations by beating Langara on penalty kicks (4-3) after a 1-1 draw in the CCAA quarter-final Wednesday afternoon.

Humber began the first-half, dominating possession on a windy day at the Terry Fox Sports Complex. In the 25th minute, the Hawks were awarded a penalty kick after the Langara keeper Kevin Monk was whistled for a foul. With Jaineil Hoilett at the spot, Monk redeemed himself, making a sprawling save to keep the match scoreless.

Minutes later, Federico Leal lined up for a free kick outside the 18-yard box. Playing the wind, Leal curled a ball that struck the crossbar.

In the 44th minute, Langara scored the game's first goal, when Merlin Fisk drove a free kick through the wall and off the hands of a diving Karman Singh. At the break, the Hawks trailed, 1-0.

Humber opened the second half pressing for the equalizer but missed on numerous scoring chances in the opening minutes. Finally, in the 65th minute, Jaineil Hoilett was taken down in the box, setting up a penalty kick for Leal, who converted to tie the match at one.

After 90 minutes of play, the match went into penalty kicks. Michael Fayehun, Jaineil Hoilett, and Cody Green scored for Humber, and Stavros Badunas sealed the win for the Hawks in the eighth round.

Keeper Karman Singh was named the player of the game for Humber, after keeping the Hawks alive in penalty kicks, only allowing three goals in eight rounds of penalty kicks.
