HAWKS OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP DEFENCE WITH 3-0 WIN

FORT McMURRAY, AB: The no.1 Humber Hawks opened the 2016 CCAA Men's Soccer National Championship at Keyano College in Fort McMurray, Alberta this morning with a 3-0 victory over the SAIT Trojans.

A slow start to the game would turn out to be an advantage for Humber as they conquered the Trojans in 90 minutes of play.

In the 33rd minute, Patrick Majcher (Mississauga) was taken down in the Trojan's 18-yard box and was awarded a penalty kick. CCAA Player of the Year, Marcos Nunes (Brampton), stepped up and scored the Hawks first goal of the tournament. Nunes has now scored seven goals in just seven career CCAA championship matches.

The score remained 1-0 well into the second half but the Hawks were in control of the game, keeping possession and not allowing the Trojans to penetrate their defensive line.

Veteran forward Michael Aigbokie (Mississauga) added a goal of his own in the 79th minute that boosted Humber up to a 2-0 lead. A few yellow cards and a final goal from Jordan Piccinin (Brampton) would finish the game with a score of 3-0 and advancement into the next round of play for the Hawks.

Karman Singh (Etobicoke) recorded the clean sheet and Hawk's head coach Michael Aquino won his seventh career game in CCAA tournament play. Humber's player of the game was awarded to captain and fourth-year player Kingsley Boasiako (Brampton).

The Hawks will play the winner of the game between the Algonquin Thunder (OCAA) and the Dynamiques du Cepgep de Sainte-Foy (RSEQ) at 3:00 p.m. MST, or 5:00 p.m.EST tomorrow evening.
