HUMBER, WATT WIN OCAA CHAMPIONSHIP
SAULT STE MARIE, Ont – Sophomore Conner Watt won his first career OCAA title to steam the No. 5 Humber men's golf team to the top of the podium Wednesday at the 2017 OCAA Championship. The unit's win advances Humber to the CCAA National Championship in Oshawa, Ontario, after securing its first provincial title in three years.
The Hawks blasted the field by 40 strokes, going 56-over par (311-301-308—920). No. 3 Georgian (+96) was second, Durham (+99) third, Fanshawe (+104) fourth, and St. Clair (+123) fifth. Humber placed four golfers in the top-15.
Watt (73-72-77) finished six-over par through the 54-hole event, holding off teammate and second-place finisher Cameron Brennan (78-74-77) on the last circuit of play at the par-72 Crimson Golf Club. With three bogies to end the front nine, Watt rebounded on the back and shot par on his final four holes.
Brennan's three-birdie, five-bogey outing put the finishing touches on his 13-over performance, securing his first OCAA Championship podium finish. It marked Humber's first double-podium finish since Christian McCullough and Alex Dumais finished one-two in 2013.
Fifth-place Luke McLean (81-75-80) was 20-over for the championship and fourth straight top-10 finish this year.
Sean O'Hara (79-82-80) rounded out the scoring for Humber, finishing plus-25 and tied for 13th.
Michael Vance (90-80-74) continued to get stronger as the tournament progressed and finished in 17th.
Conner Watt and Cameron Brennan each were selected as CCAA All-Canadians for the first time, becoming the 27th and 28th players in program history to receive the honour.
Head coach Nick Trichillo made history when the post-event awards were handed out, as he was selected as the OCAA Coach of the Year and CCAA Coach of the Year nominee. Although Humber has achieved significant national and provincial accolades, this is Humber's first OCAA Coach of the Year award in Golf.
The win marks the 20th team title in program history, the most by any school in the province.
What's Next
The 2017 CCAA National Championship will take place at the Royal Ashburn Golf Club, Oct. 17-20. Humber will look to capture its first national title in four years.
