OMAR MILES NAMED HEAD COACH OF TEAM ONTARIO BASKETBALL U17 BOYS TEAM

WHITBY, Ont – Ontario Basketball announced today that Humber assistant coach Omar Miles has been named head coach of the U17 Boys team for the 2019 season. As an assistant coach with the program last season, Miles helped Team Ontario secure a national bronze medal in Kamloops, B.C.

"I have been very fortunate over the past 11 years, to not only be recognized for my individual success as a coach but having the privilege to coach so many elite student-athletes along the way," said Coach Miles. Omar Miles in 2001, representing Team Ontario

Coach Miles' Team Ontario resume extends well beyond coaching. From 1998 to 2001, Miles represented Ontario on the hardwood, capturing the national championship in 2001 as team captain, being named the tournament's most valuable player under head coach Chris O'Rourke. 

"That's what makes this opportunity so special to me," he added, referencing the 2001 title. "Today, it is an honour for me to give back to the program as head coach."

Since Miles joined Humber's prestigious coaching staff in June 2016, the Hawks have captured two provincial medals and accumulated an OCAA record of 50-12 (.806).

Before his coaching career, Miles was a five-year starter for Wilfred Laurier of the OUA and graduated in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Geography with a Minor in French.  As a rookie, the Mississauga native was named to the OUA's men's basketball rookie all-star team.

Miles will be joined on Team Ontario by returning coaches Kevin Barnes (Southwest Academy) and Dave Bethune (Toronto Triple Threat). New additions this year include assistant coach Michael Selliah (Canada Elite) and apprentice coach Doros Theodosiou (Waterloo Wildhawks), who both coached the U15 Boys to a gold medal at National Championships last year.
