MEN’S BASKETBALL FALLS SHORT AT NIAGARA, 102-97

WELLAND, Ont – Curwin Elvis tied his career-high with 22 points, but Niagara (6-3, 4th West) edged the Humber men's basketball team (8-3, 3rd West), 102-97, Friday night at the Welland Campus Athletic Centre.

The Knights opened the game on a 10-2 run before freshman Jordon Francis gave Humber its first lead at 5:25 mark. Both teams exchanged baskets from there as the Hawks led 27-25 after the first ten minutes of play. Elvis went 5-of-6 from the floor, scoring 11 points, while Niagara struggled at the free throw line, converting a season-low 2-of-12 (16.7 percent) from the charity stripe.

Niagara used a 12-0 run midway through the second quarter to take a ten-point lead at the 2:55 mark, but two 3-pointers from Fowzi Mohamoud helped the Hawks finish the frame on 17-4 run of their own.

Humber took a 52-49 lead into the half.

The Hawks fell apart defensively in the third quarter allowing Niagara to score 27 points, shooting 13-of-18 (72.2 percent) from the floor. Former junior college standout Van Hutchinson Jr. scored 13 points for the Knights, shooting 6-of-7 from the floor in the quarter.

Niagara stretched its lead to 13 points at the 6:04 mark in the fourth quarter before Jordan Rose hit a 3-pointer to cap off a 20-8 run by Humber, trimming Niagara's lead to one.

Despite converting a season-low 21.4 percent (6-of-28) from the free throw line, Niagara hit three of its last four, taking the game 102-97.

Humber allowed 21 offensive rebounds, leading to 21 second-chance points for the Knights.

• Curwin Elvis tied his career-high with 22 points, a mark he set against Sheridan on Feb. 6, 2015.
• The 21 rebounds were the lowest total for Hawks this season.
• Fowzi Mohamoud and Jordon Francis both scored career-highs, finishing with 16 and 14 points, respectively.
• Humber did not record a block for the first time this season.
• DeQuon Cascart finished with 19 points, his fourth straight game in double-digits. 

Game Notes

• Humber has lost three straight games at the Welland Athletic Centre and is now 33-12 all-time against Niagara.
• The loss snaps Humbers two-game win streak.

With the conclusion of the OCAA season for 2017, Humber will host the annual East/West Holiday series Dec. 29-30.
