BRAMPTON, Ont -- The Humber softball team opened its 2017 OCAA campaign at home on Sunday against the visiting Seneca Sting. The Hawks, bolstered by strong pitching, solid defence and timely hitting, came out on the winning end of both games, 9-1 in game one and 4-0 in game two.
HUMBER 9, SENECA 1
With excitement running high, fans packed the Brampton Fairgrounds for the first OCAA matchup of the year for the Hawks. Head coach Duaine Bowles sent second-year right-hander Rachel Matheson-Green to the rubber to set the tone early, and that she did. Matheson-Green worked with her battery mate Maddie Pasma and was dominant throughout. Her ability to mix her pitches and locations kept the Sting hitters off balance. The final line for Matheson-Green was six innings; one earned run on three hits, three strikeouts and no walks.
In the seventh, former Durham ace Sam MacCallum took over and was lights out in her inning of work, striking out two of the three batters she faced.
Offensively, the Hawks were led by second-year shortstop Jenna Hillman (3-4 with three singles and a RBI), veteran catcher Terah Camilleri (2-4 with a triple and three RBI's), and veteran outfielder Aaliyah Davidson (2-3 with two singles, a walk and a RBI). Those three accumulated for seven of the Hawks 13 hits off of Seneca right-hander Brianna Bader.
After paving the way for Humber's offence, Jenna Hillman was named Hawks Nation Player of the Game.
HUMBER 4, SENECA 0
After a quick break to groom the field, the Hawks took back to the field. This time, Coach Bowles sent out his ace Myranda Pierson against the Sting. Last time against the Sting, Pierson was lights out as she no-hit the Sting, the first in program history.
This time she was dominant again, attacking the Sting hitters up and down the lineup. Pierson didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning, when former Hawk, Amanda Van De Graaf hit a triple with one out in the inning. The next hitter, Anna Downing put a bunt down, and Pierson fielded her position perfectly getting Van De Graaf at the plate to keep the Sting off the board. Pierson would settle down and pitch her first complete game of the 2017 OCAA campaign, going seven strong innings, allowing zero runs on two hits, no walks and five strikeouts.
At the plate for the Hawks, second-year outfielder Kate Kostuch had two hits including a double and a run scored. Sarah Franchetto had a double in her two at-bats, while Hillman picked up two more hits and reached base in all three of her plate appearances against Seneca left-hander Chantal Gendron.
Sarah Franchetto was named Hawks Nation Player of the Game.
Hawk Notes
- The Hawks improve to 16-0 against the Sting over the past five seasons.
- Alexa Vassos, Kyra Gay and Emily Erskine collected their first career hits (all in their first OCAA at-bat)
- Humber pitchers accumulated ten strikeouts and only allowed five hits in their 14 innings of work
What's next?
The Hawks travel to Kitchener to play the Conestoga Condors in a double header Wednesday night. The games will be played at Riverside Park, with first pitches slated for 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm, respectively.
2017 OCAA Women's Softball Championships
Humber is the proud host of the 2017 championship tournament. The event will take place on Friday & Saturday, October 20 & 21/17 (with Sunday as a rain day), and will be held at the Brampton Fairgrounds Field.
