HAWKS WIN GAME 1 IN WALK OFF FASHION – GAME 2 RAINED OUT

ETOBICOKE, Ontario: The Humber Hawks women's softball team, given news that their season record remained spotless due to a win presented to them due to an opponent's use of an ineligible player, extended their record to 3-0 after game one in a scheduled doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.

The Hawks knocked off the visiting Falcons in game one by a score of 3-2, in walk-off fashion. The second game was washed out as the rains came in just after the Hawks had a lead-off single in the bottom of the first.

The first game featured everything a spectator could wish. It included a fine pitched game by both pitchers, key hits, huge plays at home plate and a walk off hit to end the affair.

The Hawks ran out to an early 1-0 lead, and then extended it to 2-0 in the third inning. The Falcons were unable to figure out Hawk starter and Player of the Game Myranda Pierson until the Hawk squad created an opening in the fifth. Fanshawe scored two unearned runs in an inning that saw the Hawks allow the visiting Falcons a number of extra outs due to fielding errors and mistakes.

The seventh inning was spectacular to watch. Humber worked their way out of trouble by way of Natalie Stoberman throwing out a runner at the plate, and Pierson striking out a Falcon hitter, with runners in scoring position, to end the inning.

Stoberman, a hero just a few minutes earlier, led off the inning with hard hit single to the left side of the infield. Next was a bunt, which the Falcons unable to get an out, leaving Humber with runners on first and second with none out. A bunt moved the runners up a base. A weak pop out was the second out, and then Lauren Hollidge stepped up to the plate. With two strikes, she drove a solid line driver over the shortstop to plate the winning run.

Second year standout Elise Gregorios was the hitting star, with a single and a double.

Humber will now entertain the St. Clair Saints on Sunday afternoon at Wildwood Park. Game times are set for 1pm and 3pm.
