LONDON – After a mid-season slump that saw Humber's offence go cold, the Hawks went to London inspired to get back into the win column. Led by Dennis Dei Baning's eight RBI night, Humber (8-3, 2nd West) swept Fanshawe (7-5, 3rd West) to conclude its 2021 road schedule.
Game One: Humber 11, Fanshawe 2
Rookie David Boatto opened the scoring in the second inning with a sacrifice fly, scoring Aidan Murphy from third base. Two innings later, singles from Tyrus Bath and Stephen Nahrabeki extended Humber's lead to four.
Fanshawe responded in the fifth with a double steal and a ground out to cut the lead in half.
After a bases-loaded walk to Nahrabeki, Dei Baning put the game out of reach with one swing of the bat. The Toronto native slugged his league-leading fifth home run of the season and Humber's second grand slam of the year.
Corey Vandegraaf picked up his second win of the season, firing five innings of three-hit ball while striking out six Fanshawe hitters. Ian Zwartz came on in relief and threw two innings of shutout ball.
Game Two: Humber 15, Fanshawe 5 – 6 innings
Determined not to get swept and lose a shot at second place in the West, Fanshawe kept the game close through the first five innings.
The offence exploded in the top of the sixth inning, scoring 10 runs while sending 14 hitters to the dish. Stephen Nahrabeki had two hits in the inning, and Jakob Turner picked up a bases-clearing double.
Shaine O'Keefe earned his third win of the year, striking out five hitters in 4.2 innings of work. Maxim Skoropadsky and Cam Hibbs worked the final 1.1 innings in relief.
Humber Highlights
- Humber improves to 20-12 all-time against Fanshawe.
- Stephen Nahrabeki's .514 batting average is on pace to be a new program record. Leonard Wood's mark of .487 from 2013 is still the top mark for the Hawks.
- Dennis Dei Baning's fifth home run is the new single-season home run record for Humber. He's one home run shy of tying the OCAA record. His 25 RBIs ties Brian MacDonald's program record from 2014.
- Rookie Dalton Brownlee needs one strikeout to establish a new program single-season record.
- Humber's 15 combined home runs are the most in OCAA history.
What's Next?
Humber will conclude the regular season on Oct. 15 against Centennial (3-10, 3rd OCAA) at Connorvale Park. Humber will be the away team and the game will be streamed live on the Hawks Sports Network.
