OSHAWA – Humber baseball (6-2, 2nd OCAA) took both games at Kinsmen Stadium in the team's Wednesday doubleheader against Durham (2-6, 5th OCAA). The Hawks recorded a season-high 16 hits to win game one, 7-4. Humber earned the second win, 7-1, thanks to a strong pitching performance from two freshman arms.
Game One: Humber 7, Durham 4
Humber opened the scoring the second inning when Aiden Murphy scored on a sacrifice fly by Jeff Siemms. Two innings later, Siemms cashed Murphy again, roping an RBI double to the gap.
Braden Taylor got the nod for game one and was solid on the mound, throwing 5.2 innings surrendering three runs on five hits.
In the home-half of the sixth-inning, Durham had two runners on and was trailing by one run so head coach Jeff Gibbs turned to his closer, Riley Pollard. Pollard induced an easy pop-up to end the threat, earning his third save of the season.
Liam Sutherland, Aidan Murphy, Ty Martin, and Jeff Siemms recorded three hits, each.
Game Two: Humber 7, Durham 1
Humber's lineup continued to roll in game two, scoring five runs in the top of the first inning. Dennis Dei Banning opened the scoring with an RBI single. The Hawk's made quick work of Durham starter Jake Storry, tagging him for five runs on five hits and two base-on-balls.
Freshman Corey Vandegraaf got the start for Humber tossing 4.1 innings of work, scattering four hits and picking up a strikeout.
Game Notes:
- Humber's offence is averaging 10-plus hits a game. Ty Martin (14), Liam Sutherland (14), and Sam Lebel (13) currently sit in the top-three in the province for hits.
- Riley Pollard ties teammate Matt Stoddart for most career saves in program history.
What's Next?
Humber returns to the friendly confines of Connorvale Park for a three-game homestand. On Sept. 21, the Hawks will host St. Clair (4-1, 3rd OCAA) for a single game scheduled for 1 p.m. Before the game, Humber will unveil its championship banners from 2018.
The Hawks will conclude the homestand with a doubleheader against Lambton on Sept. 22. Game one is set for 1 p.m. and all three games will be streamed live on the Hawks Sports Network.
