Baseball Blanks George Brown in Home Opener

ETOBICOKE – The Humber baseball team (2-1, 3rd OCAA) played its 2019 home opener Wednesday evening, hosting the George Brown Huskies (0-2, 6th OCAA) at Connorvale Park. In a pitcher's duel, the Hawks squeezed out a 1-0 win in game one. A lightning storm in game two ended the evening early and a makeup date and time will be announced in the coming days.

Game One: Humber 1, George Brown 0
McCook C. C. transfer Sam Lebel hit a double in the bottom of the first inning with one out to get the Hawks started. Second-year infielder Aidan Murphy recorded an RBI single to score Lebel, proving to be the only run Humber's pitching staff would need for the night.

Second-year pitcher Braden Taylor was dominant on the mound, throwing a strong 6.1 innings, scattering four hits, while striking out five Huskies to pick up his first win of the season. Riley Pollard made his second appearance for Humber, recording the save on two pitches by getting George Brown third baseman Brandon Nieva to ground into a game-ending double play.

Game Notes:

  • Sam Lebel recorded his first extra-base hit as a Hawk.
  • Riley Pollard earned his first career OCAA save.
  • Humber improves to 13-0 all-time against George Brown at Connorvale Park.
  • Head coach Jeff Gibbs earned his first win in front of the home crowd.
