Murphy's Slam Highlights Baseball's Sweep Over Fanshawe

LONDON, Ont – The Humber baseball program began the Coach Ferreira era with two big victories over the Fanshawe Falcons Saturday afternoon. Led offensively by freshman Aidan Murphy, the Hawks swept the 2016 NCBC Champions to start the 2018 varsity season.

Game One: Humber 7, Fanshawe 3
Second-year outfielder Dennis Dei Baning opened the scoring for the Hawks in the third frame, driving in freshman Jared Gonsalves and reigning OCAA Player of the Year Liam Sutherland to give Humber a 2-0 lead.

The Hawks would add on in the fifth inning when Dei Banning hit a deep sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Hunter Bisser. Aidan Murphy collected his first OCAA hit and RBI with one swing, recording an RBI-single to score Brandon Costa.

Humber ace Brendan Lyons toed the rubber in game one and dominated the Falcons through the first six innings. Darren Dwyer got Fanshawe on the board in the final frame with a two-run triple. Lyons recorded the win for the Hawks, throwing a complete game with a career-high nine strikeouts.

Game Two: Humber 13, Fanshawe 0 (5 innings)
On the back end of the twin bill, Humber unleashed its potent offence with a seven-run second inning and added five more in the fourth. Aidan Murphy bolstered the attack with five RBI, including a fourth-inning grand slam.

Humber recorded 14 hits in the win, with seven student-athletes recording at least one RBI.

Freshman Braden Taylor received the nod in game two, throwing all five innings, allowing only two hits while recording four strikeouts.

What's Next?
The Hawks (2-0, 1st OCAA) will return to the diamond Sun. Sept. 9 with a doubleheader against the reigning provincial champions, St. Clair Saints (1-1, 4th OCAA). Game times are set for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
