Humber Baseball Signs Five for 2018 Season

ETOBICOKE, Ont – Humber baseball head coach Matt Ferreira announced Wednesday that five student-athletes have signed with the Hawks. They will join the Humber baseball program for the 2018 varsity season.

All five recruits will arrive from the high school ranks, playing baseball within the Greater Toronto Area.

"As a whole, we are very pleased with our early high school signing class," said Coach Ferreira, who is entering his first season at the helm. "This group is representative of our recruiting footprint in the GTA. That being said, these five players are the building blocks for the future of Humber Baseball while all will have a chance to contribute immediately. "

Here's a look at the newest Hawks:

Aidan MURPHY (INF, 6-1, 220, Brampton, ON.)
Sport Management, Humber College

  • Aidan is the third Murphy to play for the Humber Hawks. His older brother, Keegan, is Humber baseball's all-time leader in hits and RBIs. His sister, Meaghan, is entering her fourth season with Humber softball and was named the team MVP in 2016.
  • Coming from St. Augustine Catholic Secondary School, Murphy has led the team in home runs for the last three years and was twice named team MVP.
  • Murphy on joining Humber baseball: "I wanted to follow the family legacy and help bring this program a provincial championship."
  • Coach Ferreira on Murphy: "Aidan is a physical corner infielder with the ability to play defensively at either first or third base.  The thing that excites us about Aidan is his power potential.  He projects to be a middle of the order bat and gives us another physical presence.  Being the brother of career RBI leader Keegan Murphy, Aidan has been around the program for many years and understands the culture present."

Curtis CHUNG (C, 5-10, 205, Brampton, ON.)
Business Administration, University of Guelph-Humber

  • Chung attends St. Thomas Aquinas S.S. and plays for the Brampton Royals 18U team.
  • In 2017, he played for Team Canada in the Oklahoma Sunbelt Classic.
  • In April 2016, he was named 680 News athlete of the week.
  • Chung on choosing the University of Guelph-Humber: "I chose this school because of the unique opportunity to receive a degree and a diploma."
  • Coach Ferreira on Chung: "Curtis comes to us with the expectation of being the guy behind the plate in coming years.  He'll have an opportunity to learn and grow as a freshman.  He shows the leadership abilities necessary to thrive at the catchers' position.   He comes from the Brampton Royals program which continues to be a program that we turn to for quality young men.  He'll be familiar with many of his teammates at Humber which should make for an easy transition."

Braden TAYLOR (RHP, 5-9, 175, Toronto, ON.)
Police Foundations, Humber College

  • Attends Leaside High School.
  • Taylor features a fastball-changeup combination that differs by over 10 MPH.
  • In 2017, he made the top-40 shortlist for the Ontario Cup team as a pitcher for the Canada Games.
  • Taylor on choosing Humber College: "I wanted to play baseball for the Hawks and be part of the Police Foundations program."
  • Coach Ferreira on Taylor: "In a year where we return much of our pitching, we keyed in on a handful of arms to bring in as freshmen.  Braden was at the top of that list.  He has the opportunity to come in and compete for a spot in our rotation learning from some veteran arms in the process.  The level of compete in Braden is off the charts.  He challenges hitters and has a bulldog mentality, wanting the ball when it matters."

Jared GONSALVES (INF, 5-6, 170, Scarborough, ON.)
Fitness and Health Promotion, Humber College

  • Attends R.H. King Academy and plays for the Lions.
  • In 2014, he was named the Athlete of the Year.
  • Gonsalves was named to the Youth Team Ontario 40-Man Roster.
  • Gonsalves on joining Humber baseball: "I chose Humber because I liked the facilities, they offer my program, and have a great coaching staff."
  • Coach Ferreira on Gonsalves: "Jared has been on our radar as long as I can remember and we are excited to add him to our group of middle infielders.  He's a hard-nosed, hard-working ball player that will make a good team better.  He has the ability to come in and immediately compete for time in the middle of the diamond.  We've probably seen him play ten times over the years and not once did he disappoint." 

Aaron NASH (OF, 5-11, 180, Milton, ON)
Police Foundations, Humber College

  • Nash is a two-sport athlete for the C.K. Spartans, playing baseball and volleyball and was named the team MVP in both sports this year.
  • As a junior, he set a Spartan single-season batting average, hitting .475.
  • Currently plays for the Milton Jr. Red Sox.
  • Nash on joining Humber baseball: "I've heard a lot of great things from friends and family. They treat their athletes right."
  • Coach Ferreira on Nash: "Aaron brings a mix of tools that excite our coaching staff.  He has a plus arm from the outfield and runs well.  He comes into a situation where his toolset mixes well with our returning outfielders which should make for a dynamic group.  The intangibles are what stick out about Aaron.  He's been adamant since Day One that his goal was to be a Humber Hawk.  He exhibits the drive, passion and character that makes him the type of player that will succeed in our system. 

 Last season, the Hawks won the program's first OCAA silver medal after setting a team record with 15 wins during the regular season.
