No. 1 HAWKS SEND THREE DISCIPLINES TO CCAA FINALS
NORTH YORK, Ont -- It was a successful day for the No. 1 Hawks badminton program after three disciplines advanced to the 2017 CCAA championship finals.
Two-time national champion Olivia Lei advanced to the women's singles final with a quick 21-5 21-5 over the ACAC - Wildcard team. After two days of competition, Lei is 6-0 and will play the very talented Takeisha Wang (ACAC) in the finals. These two met in round robin play and Wang challenged Lei but ultimately fell 21-16 21-16.
Lei is looking to become just the second three-time national champion in CCAA women's singles history.
Partners Phuthita Nilyok and Chloe Rowe dominated on day two, only allowing their opponents to reach double-digits once all day. In search of winning Humber's first women's doubles crown in four years, Nilyok and Rowe defeated team ACAC - Wildcard in the semi-finals 21-9 21-9, setting up an All-Ontario gold medal match and a rematch of the OCAA title match with Seneca. In those two meetings, Humber is 2-0, winning in straight sets.
Looking to become the first duo to win back-to-back national titles in almost a decade, partners Adam Dong and Ryan Chow swept away their competition on day two and have advanced to the finals after a 21-11 21-15 win over the PACWEST in the semi-finals. In the finals, Humber will face NAIT (ACAC), the only team to take a set off the duo this season.
The gold medal round begins March 11 at 1:30 p.m.
